Hydration Health - Food Poisoning

Food poisoning can be dangerous and even deadly. Some people may not even realize they have food poisoning because the stomach discomfort may be mild. On the flip side of the coin, food poisoning can cause severe cramps, diarrhea, paralysis, severe dehydration, and even death.

Food poisoning is most commonly caused by ingesting bacteria such as Campylobacter, Salmonella, Shigella, E. coli, Botulism, and Listeria. If some of these bacteria sound dangerous, it is because they are.

Most food poisoning can be prevented with simple precaution. For example, if you use a cutting board to prepare raw chicken, make sure to wash it thoroughly before using it for something else. Ensure you wash your hands with soap and water prevents transference of fecal matter, and be sure to cook foods to a safe temperature. Also, refrigerate the foods when you are done eating and don't let the food sit out. When cooking things that spoil easily such as eggs, milk products, meats and fish, make especially sure to cook well and refrigerate promptly.

Being properly hydrated will not prevent food poisoning, but it will help in recovery. Diarrhea is very dehydrating and stomach cramps and nausea can sap your energy and even stamina. If you develop proper hydration habits like the ones found in The Blue Hydrant ProgramTM, you may find that it takes less time to recover from food poisoning.
